There is nothing more important for your home insurance risk than to properly maintain your home. Spending time on home maintenance will help reduce damage and liability, resulting in continued competitive home insurance pricing. Here are a few things you should be doing now as spring arrives to get your house in tiptop shape:

  • Power wash moss from walkways to prevent slips and falls.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke detectors.
  • Check caulking around all windows for wear and replace if needed.
  • Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement.
  • Clean your barbeque, and inspect the gas line if you use propane or natural gas.
  • Check for damage to your roof, replace loose or missing shakes, and clean gutters and downspouts to keep debris from accumulating.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filter.
  • Have your chimney cleaned.
  • Inspect landscaping (especially trees) for damage. If you see any cracked, leaning or otherwise dangerous conditions with any of your trees, have a licensed, insured tree company inspect and trim or remove them as needed.
  • Pull out the refrigerator and vacuum the coil vents.
  • Clean the dryer filter and check for any blockage in the hose.
  • Check deck railing for any dry rot, and repair as needed.
  • Hairline cracks in foundation walls might be the result of concrete curing or minor settling and aren’t automatically a cause for alarm. Mark them with tape and check them again in a few months.
  • Outdoor lighting timers should be programed so that they aren’t on during daylight hours to conserve electricity.
  • If you don’t have a first-aid kit, make or purchase one. For the ones you have, make sure you replenish any missing supplies and refresh what is needed. Keep one in your car as well.
  • Expiration date check. Dispose of any items with outdated expiration dates such as garden products, chemicals, medications and beauty products.
  • Check/install window screens. If you remove your screens for winter, now is the time to clean, check for damage, and re-install.

With all the recent cyber breaches we are all becoming more interested in protecting our identity. We want to provide a few tips to help you protect yourself against identity theft.

If your identity is stolen, on average you will spend over 40 hours and over $1,500 to recover and restore your information.

Some clues that your identity has been stolen:

  • Errors or charges that are not yours on credit card statements.
  • Billing statements are missing or don’t show up.
  • New accounts are opened in your name.
  • Debt collectors call about debts that are not yours.
  • Calls or mail about accounts in your minor child’s name.

Prevention tips:

  1. Order a credit report annually.
  2. Some credit cards now offer credit information on every statement.
  3. Carefully read all statements.
  4. Pay your bills online using a secure site if that service is available.
  5. Check and verify all charges on credit card statements.
  6. Don’t put outgoing mail, especially bill payments, in personal curbside mail boxes.
  7. Keep important documents in a safe.
  8. Don’t travel with all your credit cards, only take what you need.
  9. Buy a shredder and use it.
  10. Create passwords or PIN numbers out of a random mix of letters and numbers.
  11. Limit information on social media.
  12. Don’t give out your financial or personal information over the phone or Internet
    1. unless you have initiated the contact or know for certain with whom you are dealing.
  13. Don’t open emails from people you don’t know.
  14. Keep your computer’s operating system, browser, and security up to date.
  15. Use anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall.

Don’t let it happen to you or your loved ones!

Fall is here and now is the time to start getting your home ready for harsh Midwest winters. With temperatures falling and meteorologists predicting a colder than normal winter, the easiest and most cost efficient way to keep your home’s heat inside, while keeping your heating bill respectable, is to add fresh insulation to your attic, ceilings, basement, and walls. Innovative Insurance offers these ideas for your review.

Prepare Your Home For Winter

Have an emergency kit ready; an emergency kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.  Include the following: water, flash lights and batteries, first aid kit, whistles to signal for help, basic tools, manual can opener, small supply of food, radio, candles, lighter, blankets and rope.

  • Insulate water pipes
  • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts
  • Check your roof for leaks
  • Turn off all outside water and sprinklers
  • Clean wood stoves and chimneys
  • Install window insulators
  • Store summer tools and prep winter ones
  • Replace cracked glass, if you end up replacing the window, you will need to prime and paint exposed wood
  • Get a programmable thermostat
  • Make sure you caulk or repair and replace any siding that is failing
  • Seal cracks in windows, doors, foundations, and ducts
  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors
  • Clean gutters
  • Add insulation where needed
  • Check for leaks in gutters, windows and roofs
  • Cut shrubs away from your home

Your house is more than just an investment, it’s a place where memories are made and dreams are built. Whether you’re a first time home owner or celebrating many happy years in your dream home, from the lofts to the suburban tri levels, Innovative Insurance has a custom policy to fit all your Home Insurance needs. Because everyone’s needs are not the same, it is best to consult your agent to help assess your needs and find the insurance policy that is right for you.

We have all experienced record low temperatures and high snow fall this year, and we certainly hope spring comes soon. However, warmer weather will cause the snow to melt which can cause flooding.  There is no question Minnesota and the rest of the Midwest will be hit hard with flooding in the next few months. Now is the time to start thinking about flood insurance. According to the Weather.gov website, three factors can contribute to major flooding:

  1. Solid ground freeze
  2. A significant and growing snow pack
  3. Sudden warming

Here are some good reminders:

  • Most Flood policies have a mandatory 30-day waiting period which puts us at the beginning of April. This affects personal homes and commercial clients.
  • Flood insurance is not included under most home and business policies.
  • Water run off can be considered flooding.
  • Do you think you don’t need flood insurance because you don’t live along a river or stream? You might want to think again. Nobody is risk-free when it comes to flooding. In fact, 25% of all flood insurance claims occur in areas considered to be at “lower risk” for floods.
  • The average cost of property damage caused by a flood is $34,000, and it can take less than 1 foot of water to cause it.
  • Floods aren’t only caused by rising rivers or lakes. Flooding is also caused by levee or dam failures, or intentional releases, clogged storm drains, broken water mains, and even collapsed swimming pools!
  • Homeowners in “lower risk” areas can secure flood insurance for a very low cost.
